The Harry Potter mania has not skipped the audio books world. Apart from Harry potter books, movies and video games you could find all the Harry Potter series on audio books formats - downloadable audio books, audio books on CD and books on tape. Is it good for our children? Decide yourself after getting to know the pros and cons of the Harry Potter audio books:

The pros:

1. The Harry Potter audio books are an excellent educational activity for young children that can not read yet or for children with dyslexia. Yet, young children may be afraid of some of the chapters on the Harry Potter audio books - just skip these parts.

2. The Harry Potter audio books are the perfect solution for children who do not like to read. It will help them get all the essential values from the Harry potter books without actually reading them. More than that, it could motivate them to start reading books. One mother told me that she allowed her children to listen only to the first Harry Potter audio book. To get to know the rest of the Harry Potter series, her children had to actually read them.

3. The Harry Potter audio books are the best method to teach children proper pronunciation. A perfect reading will teach them new words and correct speaking techniques.

4. The Harry Potter audio books will keep your children busy for hours. You could use them while traveling in the car, instead of reading to them before they go to sleep or just to get some rest from your children.

The cons:

1. The Harry Potter audio books may encourage children not to read books. In some cases I have heard of, children who started listening to audio books, have read less books. Yet, I believe it’s all a matter of a good education and parents’ domination.

2. Some say that listening to audio books such as the Harry Potter audio books may damage the imagination and creativity of the children.

J.K. Rowling and the Boy Wizard, both share a very humble beginning. The author was unemployed and living on state benefits as she completed her first novel. So also, the first book was rejected by many publishers before Bloomsbury finally published it by reportedly paying a mere £10,000 for the rights to Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone.

When Scholastic published the first book in The US, it changed the name of the first book from The Philosopher’s Stone to The Sorcerer’s stone ostensibly to better suit the taste of the American readers. The change was done much against the wishes of J.K. Rowling who lacked the muscle to oppose the change being a virtual nobody at the time.

But by the time the first book was adapted into a movie, the books had already become an international phenomena and Rowling now had the clout to control her creation. She very effectively used this clout to demand a strictly British Cast for the movies and she has been successful so far, thus giving employment to most of the British Screen Actors Guild.

She nonetheless allowed the inclusion of many Irish actors such as the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore, and for casting of French and Eastern European actors in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire according to the nationalities of the characters from the book.

Her fierce opinions about keeping Americans out of her films has caused a lot of heart burn among the Americans as reflected in the views and opinions expressed on websites and blogs across the net.

One school of thought is that the Americans would never be able to perfect the accent needed for the very British children’s adventure stories set around the boarding schools. In this respect, the movies get the essence of the quintessential British boarding school genre with its elderly school masters, vast dining halls, competing sports houses, dormitories, train stations and children’s fascination with sweets. The films even stage the broomstick-bound equivalent of a soccer game. Followers of this school of thought argue that the Americans would never sound English and make for the critics to have a field day.

Another school of thought is that the exclusion of American actors from the cast smacks of Euro-Racist attitude as well as hypocrisy - a direct result of the pompous attitude of the haughty British.

If an American can never sound truly English then by the same rationale, should Brits never play Americans then? Because not every Brit can pull off a straightforward American accent either.

The argument may soon be put to an end.

Warner Bros have invited Madonna’s daughter Lourdes (nicknamed Lola), an American to play a role in the next Harry Potter movie - The Half-Blood Prince. Lourdes is only 11 but she might just be able to break the stranglehold of the British actors on the Harry Potter Movies.

It’s officially official! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the Harry Potter Theme Park set to be released in late 2009 or early 2010 is a combined effort of Universal Orlando Resort and Warner Bros. The fact that this contract was signed by Universal was a shock for many fans, who expected it to be a Disney effort. However, the prospect is very exciting nonetheless. J.K Rowling, the renowned author of the Harry Potter novels said
“The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed.”

What should one expect in a recreation of Harry Potter’s world? A few things we know are going to be there for sure are the Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade Village, and possible even the Forbidden Forest. However, Universal Studios is famed for it’s adrenaline rushing rides - not for attention to detail. How does one get rides from a fantasy world? Well, the Oscar winning production designer for the Harry Potter movie puts it simply:
“Our primary goal is to make sure this experience is an authentic extension of Harry Potter’s world as it is portrayed in the books and films.” Note the word extension. Will fans see things never existent in the books? Or will we see some pretty imaginative conversions of the already existent locations? You can find an extensive list of attractions that might be and even frequently asked questions at the only Harry Potter theme park
fan website yet: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. More information can be discovered at the official website.

A lot about the park is still unknown, but be sure to keep on checking the above websites for information. Until then, we have about two years until we can actually experience Harry Potter’s world in Orlando, FL.

The Magic of Harry Potter Films
By Morgan Hamilton

What’s up with these Harry Potter films anyway? It is absolutely amazing the effect that these movies have on some of their fans. Have you seen the first four? Well, if the answer is no, then you’re certainly in the minority. The amazing thing is that both kids and adults alike seemed to equally love the adventures of the young wizard.

As a matter of fact, the Harry Potter films alone have made J.K. Rowling a very, very wealthy woman. There’s just something about wizards and supernatural evils that gets our juices flowing. I suppose it’s the mystery and magic of it all. I know two things for sure, this movie series will be around for a long time, and lots of money will be generated from them. Harry Potter films are similar to a new-age Star Wars. It’s that kind of phenomenon.

It all began if one single book. We humans seem to love our works of fiction. Or perhaps in this case, fantasy. Either way, the Harry Potter series is a runaway smash hit. When the first book hit the shelves of every bookstore around the world, I actually didn’t really care for its. Yippy, yet another children’s novel that delves into the supernatural realm of magic and the age old good versus evil genre. Like that hasn’t been done to death already. But kids from all over the world were new to these concepts and this in turn got the adult’s attention as well.

Because of the wild enthusiasm that the kids work is flying, the adults too were getting sucked into these imaginative books. The writing was on the wall that we would soon see feature films created. While I did see the first four, they didn’t really excite me as much as I had hoped. But that’s just me, my daughter absolutely adores them. I must admit, the concept of the Harry Potter films is the perfect key to classic escapism. Isn’t that why we go to the movie theaters, as an escape from our everyday lives. Come on, you want to get your money’s worth and there’s a lot to be said for vicarious thrills.

If you’re not an avid reader you may want to simply watch the Harry Potter films. In my opinion, the third and fourth installments or more entertaining than the first two. Of course this is just my opinion, but the way cinematography was much better. The Internet also provides any fan of the Harry Potter films with a plethora of material. You can hop online and pick up any of the first four Harry Potter films today on DVD for a decent price. Amazon.com is a superstore or you can find any of these films and can buy them either new or used.

The trailer begins by sweeping across mild seas, and then zooming across towards the waves crashing against a cliff face, backed by eerie music. In the cliff face is a cave, the one where Voldemort tortured fellow orphans as a child and has hidden one of his horcrux’s, Slytherin’s locket.

The next shot is of Dumbledore’s scarred hand and blackened fingertips as they move above a rock face within the cave. The rocks fall away (in comparison to the books, where they simply vanish). You can hear him say “This is beyond anything I imagined. This is a different kind of magic. Very powerful, very powerful.” This contrasts strongly to the books, where Dumbledore describe’s Voldemort’s method as very “crude”, although perhaps he is talking about what lies within.

After a quick shot of a flash of lightning, the scene reverts to Dumbledore, who stands on top of the island in the lake, whirling his wand around his head as huge gusts of fire swirl around the island. The island can be seen to look rather glassy, yet rocky at the same time, although it is difficult to tell. Harry Potter, or any inferi that are presumably being warded off, cannot be distinguished. The basin cannot be seen either.

The trailer then moves back to what is probably an earlier scene in Dumbledore’s office. “Once again,” Dumbledore says, “I must ask too much of you, Harry.” Dumbledore must be asking Harry for a favour, possibly getting Slughorn’s memory, which holds important information concerning Voldemort’s time as a student.

After seeing a close-up shot of Harry in one of Hogwart’s halls, the typical Warner Brothers logo appears, surrounded by mist. Next, Harry is seen rushing through the thickets around the Burrow. This is part of a scene that was added specifically for the movie. Dumbledore’s voice can be heard. “Every day, every hour, this very minute in fact,” he says.

The scene briefly flashes to an above view of the same area. A small, indistinguishable group of people are running through the thickets towards the Burrow, which is burning. We’re not sure how this is going to impact on all the Burrow scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Behind the Burrow, there is a lake. Next to, but separated from the Burrow is another building, not on fire.

The next shot is an aerial view of Hogwarts castle. Dumbledore finishes his sentence over the next few scenes: “… dark Forces attempt to penetrate these walls” The next scene is of a figure, probably Draco Malfoy, who is standing in front of the Room of Requirement, which features a large and colourful wall fresco. The next scene is of Ron and Hermione, standing next to each other and looking up nervously. They appear to be in the Gryffindor common room.

After a short panorama of some of Hogwart’s halls, we see Draco Malfoy pulling the cover dramatically of a vanishing cabinet, which is what the Death Eater’s use to infiltrate Hogwarts. We then see a fiery snake (presumably conjure by Death Eaters) in some sort of dark tunnel with those funny brown bricks you see in some houses from the 60s. Beside it, on the wall, are some odd things, that I couldn’t for the life of me identify. The next too, ultra-fast shots, are of Nagini, curled up, and Voldemort’s palid face.

Next, Harry is standing next to Dumbledore beside a memorial in Hogsmeade. Dumbledore can be heard saying “This time, I can’t hope to destroy it alone,”. Harry reaches onto Dumbledore’s arm so they can apparate together. We then see 5 members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team zooming on their brooms in front of the Quidditch stands, before seeing the Gryffindor common room again, this time packed with partying students celebrating Gryffindor’s victory. Lavender Brown, who is in fact blonde (not brunette as I always naively imagined) pulls Ron towards her for a kiss.

Next, Dumbledore appears taking some a phial of memory for use in the pensieve. “This memory is everything,” he says. Slughorn is then seen extracting a memory, a silver wisp, from his brain, dragging it out with his wand. He looks quite apprehensive, although in the book he is meant to be crying. Shortly after, Harry’s face sinks into the pensieve. “You’re the chosen one, Harry … without this we’d leave the fate of our world to chance,” Dumbledore says as Harry casts some spell from the cave-island against the inferi, in vain. Next, the Burrow is seen with a ring of fire around it. Then we see many Hogwarts students and teachers gathered in one of the courtyards. McGonagall raises her wand to the sky and sends out a mini-lightning spark, for a purpose as-yet unknown.

We then see Harry, Lupin and Ginny gazing at the burning burrow, then Bellatrix Lestrange as she casts a spell in Hogwarts. The next scene is an excerpt from one already seen in the last trailer, where Dumbledore sets the cupboard in Riddle’s orphanage on fire. The next shot is of Snape (the Half-Blood Prince) leading some Death Eaters down the Great Hall, striding past the set-tables (although there is not food). Harry then calls after Snape: “Fight back, you coward.” while running down a dark forest. The scene goes back to outside the Burrow. Harry casts a spell against Fenrir Greyback, although to little avail. Harry, Lupin and some others are seen running away from a house, probably the Burrow again.

Next, Harry vanishes under his invisibility cloak on the compartment on the Hogwarts Express that Draco Malfoy is in. Shortly after, Draco hurls some spell at Harry, who is on one of the luggage racks, invisible and unable to communicate to anybody after eavesdropping onto Draco’s conversation. The next scene is of Hagrid’s hut. Death Eaters jump up and down gleefully as the hut burns to pieces. Bellatrix appears to be the most energetic. After a shot of Harry in some place unknown, Hedwig’s Theme plays over the title: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

In a little bit of fun after the end of such a serious series of serial menaces, Harry is caught gazing at a pretty girl in the library by Hermione. “Hey!” she says, “She’s only interested in you because she thinks you’re the Chosen One,”. Harry, rather arrogantly and uncharacteristically, responds “But I am the Chosen One,”. Hermione promptly hits him on the jaw with a rolled up Daily Prophet, despite Harry’s assurances that he is “kidding”. Interestingly, at the end we are informed the movie is to come out “this year”, so this trailer was either leaked months beforehand or done when the release date was still expected to be in November this year.

Warner Bros have released the first picture from the upcoming sixth Harry Potter Movie, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”. It features Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) holding a book in his hands.

The previous movie (which was the fifth of the series) featured Harry’s fifth year in school during which the Ministry of Magic had gone into a state of denial and steadfastly refused to acknowledge the return of Lord Voldemort during the entire year. It was only when Lord Voldemort made an audacious appearance within The Ministry of Magic premises towards the end of the movie that they were finally forced to acknowledge his return.

In the new film (which will be the sixth of the series), Harry Potter (Radcliffe) begins his 6th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lord Voldemort and his followers are now out in the open blackmailing the Minister of Magic with the threat of mass murder of the Muggle population asking him to move aside and make way for Lord Voldemort to seize power.

At school, Harry accidentally comes across an old Potions textbook mysteriously marked, “This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince”. Harry excels at potion making in class using the techniques described in the enigmatic textbook.

During the course of the year, Harry learns more about Lord Voldemort’s dark past and his Horcruxes through Dumbledore and the new Potions teacher who has been called back from retirement. The teacher in question is Horace Slughorn, a new character introduced to the story for the first time in Harry Potter Book 6. Dumbledore rightly suspects that Slughorn holds crucial information about Lord Voldemort’s horcruxes.

Romance is also in the air as Harry finally pairs up with Ginny Weasley and Ron pairs up temporarily with Lavender Brown much to the jealousy of Hermione.

Draco Malfoy perfects his plan to inflict the greatest tragedy of the story.

David Yates, who last directed “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix,” returns for the sixth movie. Yates comes to the films from television and is a veteran of such well-regarded BBC productions as “State of Play” and also “The Girl in the Café”.

Steve Kloves, who wrote the screenplay for the first four movies but opted out of the fifth movie returns as the scriptwriter for the sixth movie.

Notable new members of the cast include Jim Broadbent, an English actor from films, television and theatre. He is a winner of Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Frank Dillane play Tom Riddle aka Lord Voldemort, at age eleven and as a teenager respectively.

Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21st, 2008.
